For those adults ready to be In their own home or an apartment like setting rather than a residential home shared with others we have that home setting available....
provide services to adults with developmental disabilities that offer functional skills training necessary to secure a self-sustaining, independent living situation in the community and/or may provide the support necessary to maintain those skills. Individuals typically live alone or with roommates in their own homes or apartments. These homes are not licensed. Independent Living Programs, which are vendored and monitored by regional centers, provide or coordinate support services, referred to as Independent Living Services (ILS), for individuals in independent living settings. They focus on functional skills training for adults who generally have acquired basic self-help skills or who, because of their physical disabilities, do not possess basic self-help skills, but who employ and supervise aides to assist them in meeting their personal needs.
If you or a loved one are ready for this step of living in more of an apartment like setting or a home single person home vs. a group home environment, you should be asking yourself questions like, what kinds of supports will he/she need and who will provide for them? Where should that “place of his/her own” be? Perhaps the first question really needs to be: What transportation will he/she use? If someone is unable to drive but can use the bus, is there a bus system convenient to their apartment? Is the apartment located within safe walking distance of employment opportunities and shopping? What about neighbors? The neighborhood? Is the apartment complex safe? These are all things we need to think about...
A separate apartment or home presumes that this person is relatively self-sufficient and does not need "as much" support as other individuals in other specialized housing but still needs supports of many kinds just of different kinds with different day and evening needs and types of care that we continue to provide for at Congregate Connect it is simply just a different plan for the specific individual that's all. Every individual's care looks different. Every plan is different. Every plan changes as progress is made; we evolve and are here to help throughout the entire course of each individual's life.
